Businesses and consumers in the UK have access to the 26th fastest broadband speeds in the world, a new study has indicated.

According to web traffic management company Akamai, the average connection speed available in the domestic market is 3.4Mbps.

This is some way down on the 14Mbps offered in South Korea, but a higher average than in France and Spain, the study found.

However, Chris Marling, editor of comparison website Broadband Genie, suggested that the majority of internet users do not require speeds in excess of those currently provided.

Only a small number of very high tech companies require the extra capacity at present, he commented.

"Slower speeds won't affect you until we start seeing practical applications for these high speed lines, such as 3D TV," Mr Marling added.

"Hopefully, by the time this technology is commercially viable, we'll have speeds to match."

Under the government's Digital Britain plans, universal 2Mbps broadband should be available by 2012.
